Pitchfork: “MGMT Announce Self-Titled New Album”

2013 continues to impress with much anticipated releases from the biggest names in independent music. Below is an article originally published on Pitchfork:

“Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden have finally announced the new MGMT album. MGMT is out September 17 via Columbia Records.

Earlier this year, the duo told Rolling Stone that their upcoming album was recorded as a duo– not with a full band like on 2010’s Congratulations. The album was recorded at producer Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studios in upstate New York.

The album includes Record Store Day single “Alien Days” (which can be heard above), a cover of “Introspection” by the 60s garage band Faine Jade, and two songs they’ve previously performed live: “Mystery Disease” and “Your Life Is a Lie”. Goldwasser told Rolling Stone that they’re “not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it… There’s no illusion on [Columbia Records’] part that that we’re going to turn into a Top 40 band.”

MGMT will be accompanied by “unique visual elements to accompany and illustrate the new music” via something called “the Optimizer”, which “provides listeners of the album with a simultaneous aural and optical listening experience featuring video and CGI work,” according to a press release.

Music videos for “Your Life Is a Lie”, “Alien Days”, and “Cool Song No. 2″ are all in the works.
