On The Grid – Upcoming Summer Events
by Caden Marchese
I know those who are 1190 fans, listeners, DJs and friends of independent music are probably also looking for things to do this beautiful summer, and one of the many options for these excellent warm nights are shows and concerts that are happening in the Denver and Boulder areas. Check out some of these amazing shows Radio 1190 is promoting, presenting, and looking forward to, and bring a friend!
We’re especially excited about the brand new music fest that’s coming to the East Colfax neighborhood, and on July 10-12 you can mingle outside the legendary Bluebird Theater and see some of the best local and touring music at the first-ever Bluebird District Music Festival. BDMF is a collaboration between the venues in the East Colfax neighborhood including Lost Lake, Bluebird Theater, Goosetown, and Southside. Be sure to come and catch acts such as A Tom Collins, Dragondeer, Dirty Few, and King Rat.
On July 16th you can hear the spacey post-rock/emo hybrid that is The Appleseed Cast once again making their annual visit to the Hi-Dive on South Broadway. Hailing from Lawrence, Kansas, The Appleseed Cast have been making interesting and pleasurable indie rock for almost 20 years now, achieving the most success with albums Low Level Owl and Peregrine.
Japanese noise rock band Melt Banana will be bringing their unique blend of shredding fun pop metal on July 24th at Larimer Lounge in LoDo with noise-rock friends Torche, and a few days later on July 29th rising indie pop stars and record store darlings Lower Dens will be rocking the same stage. These will be fun nights for us and we look forward to seeing you there!
Also, come and party with us at Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the Bluebird Theater on July 31st! Formed in 2010, Unknown Mortal Orchestra achieved big success with their 2011 single “FFunny FFriends” and have released two amazing records since then. 2015 brought the new release of their third record Multi-Love, and it’s a jam that manages to bring in the new while reminding you of the old. A few days later on August 1st, local indie pop heavyweights My Body Sings Electric will be pounding away on the same stage, offering an accessible and fun alternative rock performance.
On August 4th at the Bluebird Theater, we’ll be swaying to the bizarre art-rock stylings of Django Django, a group that achieved commercial and critical success in 2012 with their self-titled debut. In May of this year, Django Django followed up Django Django with an album called Born Under Saturn, one that keeps up their tradition of sounds from the future.
Last but not least, we’re excited to welcome Screaming Females to the Larimer Lounge on August 4th to deliver their fast and loud brand of indie punk. Touring on their new release titled Rose Mountain, Screaming Females are sure to shake the floor.
I hope we’ve given 1190 listeners some cool things to do this summer, and we encourage our fans to check out these shows, rock out, and support the best independent music happening in the Denver and Boulder areas.
