January ’13 CD of the Month: Ascent by Six Organs of Admittance
Back with another translucent record of psychedelic glory, Six Organs of Admittance (a.k.a. Ben Chasny) explore a more electrified version of their sound on Drag City’s Ascent.
Featuring the lineup of Chasny’s side project “Comets On Fire”, Ascent mixes Chasny’s typically layered approach to folk with a more rock-band heavy sound, coming out sounding like Crazy Horse with a particularly halucinatory bent. Thunderous riffs and venturous solo’s drift throughout the record, with Chasny and company commanding the genre as if they’d never taken a break from playing with each other. Loaded with plenty of crunch to satisfy garage-heads without sacrificing the whispery ambiguity of Chasny’s music, “Ascent” is yet another terrific record from an artist who never seems content with how many records he’s released.
Out on Drag City Records, Six Organs of Admittance’s Ascent is Radio 1190’s CD of the Month for January.
