Fuck Buttons – “Slow Focus”

Slow-Focus-fbIf anything could mark the trends we’ve seen in music throughout the 21st century, it would be the rise of electronica, and an increasing obsession with sonic intensity. Though many artists use these qualities purely for the purpose of moving bodies, Bristol’s Fuck Buttons have something far more complex in mind. By using house music as a jumping off point for their noisier experiments, Fuck Buttons have created dance music that’s surprisingly introspective while still sounding completely massive, and their newest offering “Slow Focus” may be their heaviest release yet.

Incorporating hip-hop beats and more acoustic production into their ever-evolving sound, the songs on “Slow Focus” are some of the slowest burners you’ll hear on any dance record this year. But what Fuck Buttons lack in immediacy is made up for in how subtlely the tracks on “Slow Focus” grow from industrial bangers into absolute mammoths of sound. “Slow Focus” is moody and yet endlessly playful, and their songs don’t invite you to dance as much as they just swallow you whole. Those looking to groove will find plenty to chew on in “Slow Focus,” yet closer inspection reveals canyons of noise that rewards intense listening.

Out on ATP Records, Fuck Button’s “Slow Focus” is Radio 1190’s CDOTM for August. Radio 1190 would like to thank Twist and Shout for their continued support of the CD of the Month Club. If you would like to join Radio 1190′s CD of the Month Club, visit radio1190.org for all the details.
