The Pamlico Sound have been called “Boulder’s premier party

band” (The Marquee), who put their audiences into “an engorged

feeding frenzy” (Colorado Music Buzz)—but whatever you call

them, everyone who’s heard them agrees with another statement

made in The Marquee: “The Pamlico Sound bring the funk wherever

they perform.”

After a one-year hiatus which ended at the beginning of June,

The Pamlico Sound have come roaring back onto the local scene,

giving audiences not only their well-known deliriously fun dance

party vibe but a whole new soul-shaking musical experience

featuring the electrifyingly funky vocals of LaSha (say “La-

SHAY”), who is also known for her work with Funkadelic tribute

band Hamhock and Bob Marley cover band Wake Up and Live. Other

new additions to the group’s power plant include drummer Ruben

Mercado and bassist Marshall Carlson (recent transplants from,

respectively, Brooklyn and Iowa); and the fiery trumpet work of

Matt Wilkolak joining TPS’s already legendary horn section. Add

to that their new theatrical concept of “The Jive Church” – with

“Pastor Will B” leading “the Deacons” (as he calls his bandmates

onstage) and the “congregation” (the audience) in shouts of

“Hell Yeah” hallelujahs, then bringing members of the

“congregation” forward to be “Baptized in the Funk”, and you

have a sure-fire recipe for a sanctifying experience involving

motion, sweat and transcendent levels of fun.

While it’s only very recently been a publicly touted fact, TPS

are now getting known for something they’ve actually done for

quite a while: putting together amazing shows with like-minded

bands and musicians. The term “Funkstravaganza” was in fact

first coined by bandleader Will Baumgartner as far back as their

first anniversary show at Boulder’s Fox Theatre, in late

September of 2011. But back then Baumgartner, who also functions

as the group’s manager, booking agent, and self-described

“shameless and tireless promoter”, didn’t have the hubris to

call these shows “The Pamlico Sound’s” – though he actually

hand-picked the lineups for most of them.

This aspect of the band’s public persona changed in early August

of 2015, with the first “official” version of a TPS-led

Funkstravaganza, at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver. That show,

whose full name was “The Pamlico Sound’s Crosstown

Funkstravaganza” (so named because it brought Boulder-based TPS

together with three Denver-based funk bands), was such an

overwhelming success that they’ve decided to do it again with

“Funkstravaganza Too!”, this time at 3 Kings Tavern, a club

which has become a staple of the Downtown music scene in Denver.

Joining TPS for this show will be Jordan Linit’s Super Jam - a

recurring project led by guitarist Linit (of Kinetix, Analog

Son, and Ableminds) and featuring a rotating cast of the local

music scene’s heaviest hitters: this time, the other players

will include Eric Low of Fox Street on drums, Josh Fairman

(Kinetix, Analog Son) on bass, Blake Mobley (Tiger Party) on

keyboards, and Tiger Party’s vocalist Ashley Niven.

The evening will begin with Liebermonster, one of the tightest,

most exciting and well-respected funk/jazz groups on the Front

Range.

“Funkstravaganza Too!” is a Radio 1190 Presents show – which is

only fitting, considering that the band found its first mass of

rabid fans by playing a series of monthly house parties hosted

by a group of CU students; and the band will be performing on

1190’s “Local Shakedown” show this Thursday October 8th at 5 pm.
