CD of the Month: Bad Debt
Pulling off the one-guy-with-a-guitar shtick can be a tricky feat, but MC Taylor’s sophomore release as Hiss Golden Messenger, “Bad Debt”, is a tremendous example of folk songwriting that avoids the pitfalls of corniness.
Originally planned for release in 2010, “Bad Debt” suffered a major setback when the warehouse containing all prints of the record was burned down, leaving spare few copies in circulation. But Bachelors of Paradise Records have finally given “Bad Debt” a wider release, and with good reason: “Bad Debt” may be the finest collection of songs Taylor has ever recorded. Wonderfully walking the line between being uplifting and haunting, the songs on “Bad Debt” were recorded onto cassette in Taylor’s kitchen following the birth of his son. Though the album’s solitude lends it an air of spookiness, it is ultimately the warmth and optimism of “Bad Debt” that shines through, making for an introspective, yet uplifting release.
Out on Bachelors of Paradise Records, Hiss Golden Messenger’s “Bad Debt” is Radio 1190’s CDOTM for February.
