djAlisha Diary Entry #842:
Record Store Day is on Saturday April 18th, 2009!
To be honest, I didn’t know about Record Store Day until our Music Director wrote about it on this very blog. I know about Free Comic Book Day and have participated in that in the past and now I have a new “holiday” to look forward to. But do I need more records? Of course I do!
I colllect 7″, well I used to. I used to buy up every 7″ I could when a band I loved would come through town and I used to have an eBay addiction collecting records from Yo La Tengo and Stereolab. I also collect records from Obliq Recordings, Colorado’s best-kept secret of a label that is huge in Germany but not many other places. I have a giant collection of Songs: Ohia records too. I have Sigur Ros’ first album Ágætis byrjun on vinyl as well because I thought if it sounds that great on CD imagine how it would sound on wax! These are some of the records I covet the most. I also have the soundtrack to one of my favorite childhood movies Hairspray on vinyl too.
I hit a record-buying lull for awhile but in the last few years my addiction for it is back. I love that great labels are still putting out vinyl and catering to people like me who also like to listen to their music on an iPod. If you haven’t bought a record in a long time you should know that many labels are also giving away free digital downloads of the record you buy so that you can experience the songs on the go or on your record player. And labels are also offering cool “gifts” if you buy albums too… like if you got MIA’s Kala, you got a cool bandana! Hey I’m up for anything to see this dying breed not become extinct!
Ya know I actually stopped buying vinyl because most of the club djing I was doing was laptop based, so I just sort of stopped. But what got me excited about collecting again is finding the most amazing mod vinyl carrying cases (yes those on the right). These are the ones that I imagine my mom having when she’d bring records over to her girlfriends house for a slumber party in the 60s. Its the little things…
Another thing in case you don’t know much about Record Store Day is that participating stores have special vinyl releases to lure you into the store. So to participate in Record Store Day, pick up some old or new records and feel good about keeping VINYL alive! You can go here for a list of all the participating record stores in Colorado (or elsewhere) to partake! OH and 1190 is going to be doing another all-vinyl day next Wednesday so I hope you can tune into my radio show then from 4-6pm. Also I’ll be interviewing Jeremy from Junior Boys at 5pm that day too!
LYLAS,
