Hot Congress Block Party

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’m just going to do some copy and paste action here, because this press release is so good! This is an awesome cause, so please read on…

GET YOUR POWDERED WIG READY, THERE’S A NEW CONGRESS IN TOWN
A Hot Congress Block Party

The First Continental Congress of the United States was a meeting of representatives from twelve of the thirteen Britsh Colonies in North America. On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. On April 18, 2009, a new hot congress will be delegated to the city of Denver, Colorado. Hot Congress consists of local musicians working together not only to bring their art closer to you, but also you closer to your local music scene. This innovative congressionally hot collective has been working in cahoots with local music venues such as the Hi-Dive, Moe’s, and the Larimer Lounge towards raising money for the release of the first Hot Congress Compilation CD. Our other main focus has been the creation of hotcongressdenver.com, an interactive community of artists displaying, networking, and inspiring each other through art and music. This site consists of user generated content, such as reviews, blogs, live performance videos as well as shorts created by local film makers, news/show postings, a gallery of still frame art from a variety of mediums, and a venue directory to help assist not only bands within the state of Colorado, but also help smaller bands from around the country as they book tours our way. The launch of hotcongressdenver.com will take place on April 18, 2009 at the Hot Congress Block Party at the Larimer Lounge and Meadowlark. (*Note: The website is already up and really cool!)

More Summer Festivals!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I mentioned the UMS fesival dates a few days ago, but that’s just one of a few really cool festivals happening this summer!

Titwrench is planned to happen July 24-26 at some of Denver’s coolest venues like Rhinoceropolis, Blast-o-mat and Glob. The whole thing is female-centered and DIY.
// EXPERIMENTAL! // HARSH NOISE // DANCE! // METAL // PERFORMANCE ART // BASEMENT POP // FREAK FOLK // OTHER //
((((ALL YOUR DREAMS))))
Sarah Slater (also the host of the Bring Your Own Record parties) is putting this together and you can contact her at titwrench@gmail.comĀ  if you want to contribute or play.
The line-up hasn’t been made yet, but I have a feeling some awesome local, all-girl bands like Lady Parts, Married in Berdichev!, Yellow Elephant and Valet Park This might be involved.

The Westword Music Showcase is going to have some big headliners (Meese, Built to Spill and The Fluid) along with 50 other local bands. It’s set to happen Saturday, June 13 in the Golden Triangle neighborhood of Denver.

Hot IQs Breaking Up

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Earlier this week I saw in a press release with a little note about Hot IQs‘ show at the Bluebird on June 19th – **This will be the LAST Bluebird Theater show for the Hot IQs!** How weird! Either the band was breaking up or the Bluebird was going under. I hadn’t heard anything about the end of the Hot IQs, but of course it didn’t seem very likely that the Bluebird was going anywhere. Westword reported a few days ago that the band is in fact calling it quits. Eli Miskin told them that, “We’re all growing up and we’re all doing our own thing,” says Mishkin. “It’s time. We felt like we’ve outdone our wildest dreams what this band ever hoped to do. So we’re all super excited and content, as far as that.”

The Hot IQs have always been dear to Radio1190. In fact, Elaine and Eli met as DJs at our station! The indie pop band had a very successful run as Denver’s leaders of the witt-rock genre. I remember seeing them in Fort Collins twice when I was in high school. At one of the shows I went to the merch booth to get a button from Bryan and realized that one of the cool things about local bands was that you could actually connect with the members of the band. I was a really shy, awkward teenager but Bryan made an effort to chat with me and I still have my button. That sure didn’t happen at the big name pop-punk/ska shows I was going to at the time. Be sure to catch these guys at one of their last shows! 1190 will miss them dearly.

May 1 – Hodi’s Half Note (Fort Collins)
June 19 – Bluebird Theater
Aug. 1 – Larimer Lounge BBQ Show

Individual members are still working on their own projects too! Eli has been playing solo acoustic shows and Bryan is involved with Accordion Crimes.

I <3 DIY Venues

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Shows at DIY spaces always had a special appeal to me for lots of reasons and are consistently fun and friendly. While they’re a bit lacking in Boulder there is a plethora of DIY spaces in Denver…

Imperial Shit Hole: This is a new DIY venue/gallery/event space at 3700 Franklin St. They have put on a few art shows, but on April 19th they’ll be having a bit of a re-start to make people more aware of the venue. The show on the 19th will be with Vampire Hands (currently in rotation) and local band Woodsman. After this they’re hoping to “do a few music shows a month probably one to two art shows as well as multi-media events, film showings, game nights, etc.” I found out about this place from the Woodsman and I’m really excited to check it out.

Rhinoceropolis: These guys just celebrated their 4th anniversary on April 1st! Rhino is located at 35th and Brighton. It’s a warehouse space that a few very progressive artists/musicians live in. They have had so many incredible bands come through here – HEALTH, Dan Deacon, Lightning Bolt, Red Pony Clock, Ettrick and a million more. They have shows more often than any other DIY venue around and are doing a very good thing for Denver.

Glob: Rhino’s little next-door neighbor.

Wax Trax: Denver’s greatest record store. They’ve cleared out the old used CD room and now regularly have shows in the space. Last summer the Frantix played their reunion show here. The nice thing about shows at Wax Trax are that they usually happen on Saturday afternoons and they’re a great way to check out local bands you haven’t heard before.

Blast-o-mat: Near the corner of Federal Blvd. & 7th Ave. They mostly put on punk/hardcore/metal shows. In 2007 they won Westword’s Best Underground Venue award. They are really more of a collective than just a venue. The space also includes a record store called Nervous Breakdown , an office, a screen printing space, a storage space for bands who practice in the warehouse, and a sound booth for running and recording live shows.

These are just a few highlights.

This post was inspired by Friday night when I got to see Nobunny play on top of my friend’s kitchen counters here in Boulder.

I <3 Gigbot

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Have you started using Gigbot yet? This wonderful site is the product of a few local web designers and seems to be the best way out there to keep track of all your upcoming concerts. They have one giant calendar of every show happening in the Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins/Colorado Springs area and after setting up a simple account you can construct your own Giglist of shows you’d like to see. They even keep track of DIY venues like Blast-o-mat and Bar Bar. If you want to go a little further you can follow your friends to see which shows they’re planning on checking out, comment on shows you’re realllllly excited about and upload photos of a show you just went to. Gigbot just recently went national so you can use it in any city. This is a really easy site to use and helps a ton in keeping track of all the great shows that come through here.

SXSW Recap: Julie Doiron at Spider House

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

I was so happy to get to see Julie Doiron since I’m so in love with her recent album. I’m even more in love with her after seeing her play. She was one of the sweetest performers I’ve seen – she kept asking the audience for requests and got so disappointed when someone shouted out a song she didn’t remember. We heard all about the taxi ride she got to the venue, what she had had for breakfast and other details of the day she felt obliged to share. Her simple line-up with Fred Squire on drums and herself on guitar worked really well. They made some of the songs a lot funkier than they are on the album which I liked a lot.

SXSW Recap: Golden Triangle at Spider House

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

At the encouragement of Ed from Under the Mattress we checked out Golden Triangle, a garage rock/post-punk band whose members from Austin, Atlanta and Memphis have converged in Brooklyn. We were very impressed by their drummer’s unwavering vocals that reminded us a little bit of Mark E. Smith and the wild tambourine shaking of their two front ladies.

I wish I could say that 1190 has some of their music, but all their super limited releases have slipped by us. Their most recent record was released by Mexican Summer, a very new label that focuses on glitzy limited edition vinyl releases available only through subscriptions.

Also: check out the band’s Top 10 list from Dusted Magazine.

SXSW Recap: Coathangers at Spider House

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I caught the Coathangers in Austin at a venue called the Spider House – a sprawling coffee shop that had four different stages going. Definitely my favorite venue of the trip. The Coathangers are an all-girl punk/garage rock band from Atlanta. They were on the very top of my list of bands not to miss at SXSW. I want to be best friends with the girls in the band but I also think that they’d probably tear me apart. When they first took stage I immediately noticed the bruises all up and down the drummer’s leg. (She’s the tattooed one in the pictures below.) During one of the last songs when she started wailing on her leg with a tambourine I realized where they came from. These girls are super cute and also really good musicians – they rotated through all the instruments. The way they thrashed around and screamed in ear-splitting tones exuded fearlessness and I couldn’t help but dance. I love seeing shows like this that make me feel like I could be in a really badass all-girl band myself if I just picked up an instrument. I wish they had gotten to do “Nestle in My Boobies,” but the sets are short at SXSW and they were mostly playing brand new stuff.

Their brand new album “Scramble” will be in rotation very shortly!

Denver Supergroups

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

There are two pretty new local supergroups with upcoming shows I’ve been getting really excited about!

HOUSES
Houses is an indie-pop group with members of Widowers, Blue Million Miles, Hearts of Palm, Harpoontang and a bunch of others. They’ll be at the Hi-Dive on Friday March, 20th opening up for other local bands D. Biddle and Everything Absent or Distorted. Definitely check out this show because D. Biddle shows are few and far between these days.

SNAKE RATTLE RATTLE SNAKE
This band features members of Bad Luck City, Monofog, Mr. Pacman and Hawks of Paradise. They’re so secret and hip there’s not much info about them to be found on the interweb. They’ll be at the Hi-Dive also on March 26th opening up for Ideal Fathers and Lion Sized. Don’t miss them either!

SXSW!

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

For those of you going to Austin:

Check out the SXSW music player. It’s a random stream of all the bands who will be playing in Austin. Good way to find out about all those bands you’ve never heard of!
For those of you not going to Austin:
Denver’s Decider has made a list of all the SXSW-bound bands who are also coming through Colorado. Radio1190 is presenting nearly all these shows, so maybe you can even go for free!
