Part of the joy of being in radio since Year One are some of the early promo records. Back in the day, when disc jockeys had some say about what they put on air, record companies would make promo copies available for jocks as well as music and program directors. Here’s one from a new band they are trying out on the Verve label. The banana peel is long since gone from the cover, but on the label itself you can see that this is a “Disc Jockey Record.” “Hmmm, this Lou Reed guy is pretty interesting. And Nico, what a trip. Will probably want to listen to this more than once…”

My recent junket to Twist & Shout Records resulted in me spending approximately 25% of my recent paycheck. The bulk of this investment, which beckoned me from behind the glass, was dedicated to an SST release that I have only heard exists, that is the infamous 1991 “U2” single, performed by legendary sonic outlaw group Negativland. Not only was this an original pressing, it was still sealed. That goes with out saying that it was accompanied by a substantial price tag, the exact amount will remain undisclosed as of this writing, and no I haven’t opened it.
