Hey Party Animal how are you? I feel a little out of the online loop. Work’s busy. Life’s busy. Ya know…… But here’s what I’ve been into lately.
1)Ice cream anywhere…. Little Man Ice Cream’s green tea lime sorbet, Red Trolley’s sea salt caramel ice cream sandwich and Sweet Action’s Vegan Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich! VIVA SUMMER (even in the rain)!
2)YACHT – See Mystery Lights
3)The Lovely Feathers – Fantasy of the Lot
4)Watching the Beaver Trilogy with Katherine-
5)Enjoying my new little baby niece!
THINGS I’VE HEARD ABOUT BUT HAVEN’T HAD TIME FOR YET, HAVE YOU? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU LIKE?
-Spinal Tap’s album Smell the Glove
-Wilco The Album …I like what I’ve heard so far, but still haven’t had the full listen yet)

-Michael and Michael Have Issues
An article in today’s edition of the Colorado Daily gave the erroneous impression that Radio 1190 is canceling shows due to a lack of hosts. As a student run organization, we see our share of turnover, but everything is fine. The two current hosts of our News Underground show said their goodbyes last night, but we have two new hosts who will be taking over the show next week. So there is no need to panic. But thanks for the concern!
Listeners, watt owners, underwriters, and everybody else, Radio 1190 is fine. Tune in next Tuesday evening at 7 pm and here our new hosts as they dig deeper on Radio 1190′s News Underground!
This Thursday night my favorite local band Aenka will be performing at the Mercury Café in Denver as part of a benefit concert for a friend of theirs who was recently seriously injured in a hit and run accident. There’s a $5 cover, and a great bill of local musicians playing in one of the finest acoustic settings in town.
See you there!
What a weekend. How was yours? I attended Mixed Taste at MCA Friday night, hosted an outdoor screening of the cult film The Room Saturday night with homemade ice cream cupcakes and well today went to a child’s birthday party, how’s that for summertime?! I noticed Facebook was all amuck this weekend with peeps looking for Bon Iver tickets for either of the two sold out shows. My guess is that the shows were sold out because people thought that Bon Jovi was playing. JK. Did you go? How was it? Did Justin Vernon’s voice translate onstage as well as his record? While talking about Bon Iver at my house last night, the crowd was mixed… okay, well I was the only one of us who admitted to liking the record. In fact, the conversation quickly shifted to how great the Dirty Projectors album is…
If you’re new the the 1190 blog, I’m DJ Alisha and I like to post five things I’m digging on. I call this High Five!
Here’s what’s on my radical radar now:
Geeky Dreamboats… it reads like a Teen Beat magazine. Who’s your favorite nerd crush? Its tough to choose, but my ongoing nerd crush is Jason Segel and it has been for years! He had me at Lady L.
Food Party is my new fave! Here’s a taste of this kooky show on IFC:
Yay! I’m gonna see Zach Galifianakis’ film Visioneers at Starz on July 29th! I’m having second thoughts on my “geeky dreamboat,” Zach Starts-with-a-GAL-ends-with-a-KISS Galifianakis may be my ultimate crush.
The UMS is coming up. I decided this year that I would see bands that I haven’t seen perform before. I’m working on my list, but if you want to suggest your band or a band I should see, please comment below! <3
BUY ME THIS FOR MY BIRTHDAY IN OCTOBER:
And lastly, I wanted to give a high five to Richard Kelly’s The Box. Its not out yet, but I’m anticipating it. This is the guy that did Donnie Darko and Southland Tales. His third film sounds awesome and weird like usual and he wrote the film based on a six-page short story he read. The Arcade Fire composed the soundtrack, along with Owen Pallett from Final Fantasy.
Well take care this week and stay cute. My social calendar is filling up quite nicely with a Slim Cessna’s Auto Club concert, my self-imposed watch two Alfred Hitchcock films on my outdoor screen and the big pancake-bq! Oh and more FOOD PARTY!
The year is halfway over and it got me thinking about what albums have come out this year that will make it on my Top 10 list. As I sat in the studio today making my list, I came up with many albums, more than 10 – some I love, some I want to listen to more, etc. So today on-air I featured some of the year’s (so far) best. I think this is a good start on some of the year’s best. What are you digging on in ’09? What did I miss? What local records? Discuss.
Amidst the prevailing jingoism, explosives, beer, and Michael Jackson that consumed an entire nation this Independence Day weekend, I found myself alone and left to my own devices, beginning to go stir crazy, then I remembered that fortuitous day when I first heard the desperate lo-fi lamentations of Soviet Punk icon Yanka Stanislavovna Dyagileva/Янка Станиславовна Дягилева. I was instantly enthralled by her voice, her exagerated vibrato dripping with attitude, r’s rolling beautifully off of her toungue, a cloud of frigid Siberian breath visably emanating from her mouth as she accompanies herself on a cheap nylon stringed guitar. I now had a Fourth of July project, that is, to gather as much material (video, audio, and prose) on the great Yanka. What I found was an incredible body of work that culminates with her final recording ominously titled Pridyot Voda (Water Will Come), which she completed shortly before her suicide by drowning in the Inya river near her childhood home in Novosibirsk.
Though her star shone for a brief period of time (1988-91) she left an indelible influence on the alternative underground of the rapidly disintegrating Soviet Union, within which such music was illegal and relegated to underground venues and apartments.
Okay, how are you? I’m done with my MJ mourning. I’ve moved on. So much going on in the world, locally, in Alaska… How was your 4th? Were you at The Shoppe in Denver? 1190′s own Adam entered the cupcake eating contest, but I missed it. Adam got 5th place, yay! I spent America’s birthday at an amazing house overlooking Boulder in a giant heated pool, MEOW! Amazing firecrackery view. POP! POW!
Did you see any fireworks?
Here’s what I’m loving now. You know, the things (usually five of ‘em) that deserve a HIGH FIVE cuz they’re so awesome:
1)BATDANCE! I’ve had bits of that song in my head for the last few days so I had to Youtube it. While it isn’t one of Prince’s best, it was exciting at the time and fun to relive. Man, Batman was such a great film. Oh and speaking of Prince, I only wanted 2 see laughing in the Purple Rain! Purple Rain could be my favorite soundtrack ever.
2)Robogeisha: A handful of people have sent me this link over the last few days… and yes I will see this film someday.
3)Rusty the European Tour! I would SO wear a jacket like that with my name on it. And man, I wish I was on vacay in Europe right now, preferably with the Griswold family.
4)Bruno is out next week! I’ve watched zat trailer so much! I also had fun on his “Meinspace” page!
5)Did you go to Hinterland on First Friday? If not, here’s what you missed: “Crossed Existence: 40 years of (un)related memories” …mixed media installations by Sabin Aell, Viviane Le Courtois and Andrew Novick.
6)Newish Dinosaur Jr. video. Sort of reminds me a little of the Skinny Puppy breakdancing video. I like the song okay. I love J. Mascis’ locks. Love Lou’s face!
7)Le Tour De France. I’m not fanatical enough to stream it online, but I find myself following the teams a few days in… remember when Kraftwerk did that Tour De France song?
8)I’d like to see Zowie Bowie, I mean Duncan Jones’ directorial debut Moon. While its received ho-hum reviews, I will see it on dvd and probably like it more than the reviews I’ve read. It stars Sam Rockwell who plays an astronaut who discovers a clone of himself on the moon.
9)Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian has a new project out. Its called God Help the Girl and is a record full of cute pop songs sung by a girl group that he assembled (think The Ronettes). His ultimate goal is to turn the project into a musical film, so this is the soundtrack to it. I just ordered my copy, so I only know a few songs that I heard online and the two B&S songs on it, but am eager to hear the whole thing!
10)Happy Birthday Red Trolley! My favorite ice cream/gelato shop in North Denver turns one today and to celebrate they had a party and specials on their food. While I was there, I saw a guy with an 1190 t-shirt on…. the one from a few years ago (maybe four) with the record on it. Wish I would have talked to him, but was busy chatting with friends.
