Five things or more of AWESOME this (and last) week b/c I love you:

1)Star Trek! Saw it, really liked it! And I liked playing Guitar Hero at the theater while waiting to be seated. I scored a 94% on Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” I’m definitely out of practice.

2)Speaking of Star Trek, summer is movie theater going time. I can’t wait to see BrunoThe Hangover, Year One and Paper Heart. I love action adventure movies, but I’m predicting these comedies are gonna be my top notch hits of the summer. Yes, I’m calling Paper Heart a comedy cuz some of my favorite funny people are in it.

3)Dangermouse/Sparklehorse/David Lynch collaboration. You know I’ve been listening to this over the last week and its growing on me. When I heard about it, I was stoked and since listening to it, its a little “meh” for me, but I love the concept for the album.

4)img1…click the pic and share in the laughs with me!

5)Jarvis Cocker playing art gallery in Paris a few weeks ago… gray beard n all!

6)Free episodes of Twin Peaks online. My obsession begins…AGAIN!

7)Rocky Mountain Low: The Colorado Musical Underground of the Late 1970s

8) New Modest Mouse single. You know I actually stopped buying their records after The Moon & Antarctica, but I’ve continued to see them in concert if they’re in a city I’m in, but I’m hoping this new record is as good as this single and will maybe get me “into” the band again.

This Week’s 8 am Old Schools

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Mon – 5/11-Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In) The Chocolate Watchband cut this in a day for a ‘67 exploitation about what those pre-rave hippies were up to.
Tues – 5/12 – The Rains Came a classic from 1965 and a legend in waiting. Doug Sahm leads the Sir Douglas Quintet in a sounds that combines a Cajun with a Mersey beat.
Weds – 5/13 – The Golden Age of Rock and Roll is recalled in this 1974 piece of nostalgia as Mott the Hoople remembers leather guitars and electric jackets. Or something like that.
Thurs – 5/14 – The Man with the Child in His Eyes. Kate Bush, 19 in 1978, sings well beyond her years about a guy who has that Peter Pan thing going on. But she is digging it.
Fri – 5/15 – Ronnie and the Delinquents take you to a Bad Neighborhood. Dr. John Mac Rebennack was a kid playing guitar in this New Orleans band when this was recorded. A barroom brawl, a pistol goes off and injures a finger, he switches to piano. But first, three minutes in the bad part of town!

Happy Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Dedicated to all mommies out there:

And this is especially dedicated to my mom who for years I called my mom “Mother” in the voice of Danzig, in which she would do her best Danzig and say “Aaalishhhhaaaa”!

<3 to you,
djAlisha.

PS: This too from last night’s Saturday Night Live-

Rachel Getting Married=Indie Rock Party

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

So I chatted a bit about it on-air, but if you didn’t get a chance to listen (Wednesday 4-6p), you might have missed me talk about the film Rachel Getting Married.

Have you seen it?

I cannot get the musical aspect out of my head. Of course it shouldn’t be easy to shake… the film was directed by Jonathan Demme, who did Stop Making Sense and Neil Young: Heart of Gold both wonderful concert films. But this film was different, not a concert, but an indie film with a handful of great actors and musicians.

I honestly didn’t know anything about the film except that Anne Hathaway was supposed to be all messed up in it and it was nominated for awards. So I was pleasantly surprised when the film begins and I see names like Robyn Hitchcock and Fab Five Freddy in the opening credits.  Then as the film continues I notice the guy playing the groom looks awfully a lot like Tunde the lead singer from TV on the Radio, and it was! Robyn Hitchcock was singing in the wedding band and  Fab Five Freddy was one of Tunde’s family members. Each one of their performances were small, but endearing.

Demme said that when he decided that he was making the film he imagined putting together the best dinner party ever and that’s how he went about casting… pulling people from all corners of his world to bring this film to life. The wedding scene was my favorite part of the film – warm, loving, fun and just awesome. The dvd featurettes are insightful too.

Here’s a clip from the wedding scene… I promise it doesn’t spoil anything for you, its just this is the part I can’t kick… Tunde singing Neil Young’s “Unkonwn Legend” to his bride (it starts about 1:17 in):

(yes this is a bootleg copy taped in a Spanish theater, but the first version I sleuthed online)

DJ Alisha High Five & Jazz Handzz

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I love May, it should be summertime anyday!

What else am I loving on…

Jazz handzz go out this week to Radio 1190’s new CD of the Month for May. Its a band called NOMO. 1190 has chosen their album Invisible Cities as our premiere album of the month. You might have heard of them. They’re from Detriot. This is a band that’s new to me, but I’m digging the Fela-inspired jazz they make. I’ve only heard a few songs, so I’ll have to give it a longer listen at the studio. Its out on Ubiquity, which is a great label, home to artists like Brakestra and Greyboy.

1)The Streets’ (aka Mike Skinner) “He’s Behind You, He’s Got Swine Flu” song and video…

2)As my friend Brandon says, “Peaches and Fischerspooner have albums out today, what year is it?!” Yes, they do and I’m down with it, I need some dancey summer jamzzzzzz from some “classic” electroclash groups.

3)The Faint and Ladytron tonight at Ogden!!!!!!!!

4)Finally saw The Wrestler! It was just as great as I’d wanted it to be. RAM JAM!

5)Hausu: I love this quirky, weird, Japanese horror film and I was just overly-excited about the film again because my friend Pablo is going to watch it and now I will know someone else who has seen it and we can discuss it. If you’ve seen it, let’s chat about it!

<3,
djAlisha.

PS: Jazz handzz & a high five to Baby’s Gang “Challenger” song! The most amazing pop culture gem about the explosion of the Challenger next to that Punky Brewster episode! Second thought… I don’t know if they’re singing about the explosion or about the rocket before it launched……?!

The Flat Response

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I finally got to see Houses at the Hi-Dive last night, a local supergroup who everyone has been talking about lately. They were really awesome live, probably helped by the fact that there were 8 people on stage. There seems to be a direct correlation between number of band members and amount of fun had on stage. I was also happy to see Lance there from The Flat Response recording the show. He puts up tons of live recordings of local and national bands on his site that all sound great. One of 1190’s favorites right now, Cryptacize, have three different show up there and there’s also a few older shows from Houses so you can experience them live yourself. Lance has put together an incredible resource for great music, be sure to check it out!
