Barred for Life is a forthcoming book documenting Black Flag related tattoos. To get information for the book a group of folks are touring the US to interview and photograph people with Black Flag tattoos. They’ll be at 3 Kings Tavern on November 9th if you want to participate! From their website, “The purpose of this book is to document a growing trend in an entire generation of people rallying around an image that seems to project a lot of good energy. The Bars have all but transcended the band, Black Flag, and are now this point of reference; a statement that you are a punk and that you have some pretty fucking high ideals for living in this nightmare we call modern life.” Check out their website for lots more information.

Sonnenblume on the Local Shakedown!

Do you know the Bocumast record label? They are one of my favorite sources for local music. Today they put out two brand new releases that are available for FREE on their website! Click on the pictures for direct links to download them…

“Free Radicalz!” is the work of Thundercade aka Ryan from BDRMPPL. Booty beats and electronics.

“Opened Captioning” is the work of Yawntron aka Shane from Wire Faces and Tom from Iuengliss. Like an electronic version of Hella, but even crazier.

And if you want MORE free, local music to download, check out the Gypsy Cab Co.‘s new CD. They are a group of high schoolers from Denver who came together over their mutual love of the Black Lips. They may be young, but they are pros at writing catchy garage songs. They’ll also be playing a live set on Under the Mattress on August 16th!

The Flat Response

I finally got to see Houses at the Hi-Dive last night, a local supergroup who everyone has been talking about lately. They were really awesome live, probably helped by the fact that there were 8 people on stage. There seems to be a direct correlation between number of band members and amount of fun had on stage. I was also happy to see Lance there from The Flat Response recording the show. He puts up tons of live recordings of local and national bands on his site that all sound great. One of 1190′s favorites right now, Cryptacize, have three different show up there and there’s also a few older shows from Houses so you can experience them live yourself. Lance has put together an incredible resource for great music, be sure to check it out!

New Material from Lilium

I was very excited to hear today that local band Lilium is releasing new material. Here’s the info straight from the band:

We are excited to announce that we just finished mixing our new album called “Felt”, ten songs featuring our good friends, Hugo Race, Kal Cahoone, Vicky Brown, Xian Lechevretel, Thomas Belhom (Tindersticks), Vassili Caillosse (Santa Cruz) & Marta Collica (John Parish).

Of course we will keep you posted with the release infos very soon. In the meantime please enjoy this first song called “Her man as run”. Thank you so much for your constant support.

Lilium was started by Pascal Humbert, the bass player of 16 Horsepower. The first Lilium album, Transmission of All the Good-byes, came out in 2000 on Glitterhouse Records. You can go here to check out an interview that Pascal did in October 2000 on the Local Shakedown.

Untitled #20 (Trip)

There’s an awesome event going on at the Denver Art Museum tonight. It’s Untitled #20 – an event of live music, collaborative art and more centered around the “Psychedelic Experience” exhibit up now at the musuem. It’s from 6-10 PM at the DAM. Our own Ed from Under the Mattress will be there DJing along with DA from Wax Trax and Eddie B from Sputnik! There will also be a poster screening station, remastered 60′s fashion on display, and performances from local bands including Sweet Tooth Meat Tooth, Mike Marchant and Rob Drabkin. Sounds like lots of fun! The Untitled events happened a lot last year, but this is the first one of 2009. Don’t miss it!

Jessi from the morning show did a great interview with Hutch from The Thermals. Listen in at 2:00pm on Friday to hear it. They’ll be playing at the Marquis later that night with Shaky Hands.

Local hardcore band Crack Magik will be coming into the Local Shakedown on Friday from 4-6 to play a live set and spin some records. They seem to be rather unknown right now around Denver, but they’re one of my favorites! They’re super excited about this also, it should be lots of fun.

Soul Merchants “Gates of Heaven” [Iron Gate Records, 1986]

You can imagine that I always love finding old local albums in record stores (I do the Local Shakedown!). I actually had Andrew Novick on my show in February and he brought in this record to play and then I found it at Bart’s two weeks later! These guys were a gothic post-punk band around for only 2 years in the 80s. You can instantly see their goth influence looking at the album art – the album sides are named Death and Life and the band members are photographed in all-black outfits in a cemetery. I believe legendary producer Bob Ferbrache recorded the album and also played keyboards on it. I’ll be sure to bring it in for my vinyl day slot tomorrow from 1-2 pm. Tune in!

Final Events at The Lab at Belmar

Have you heard that the Lab at Belmar is joining forces with the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver starting in May? For the last six years the Lab has been the cultural heart of the Belmar shopping center with lots of interesting art exhibits, programs and lectures. They’ll be continuing all the same programs at their new location, but have a few special goodbye events going on for their last weekend in the Belmar space.

FEMINISM & CO.: ART, SEX, POLITICS

LIBIDO! DRIVE AND NO DRIVE – ADULTS ONLY – FREE PIZZA AND LIVE MUSIC WITH ROGER GREEN

Feminism & Co. is a program series at The Lab that explores issues relating to women and gender. Each evening tackles a different facet of modern feminism. These evenings address women’s – and men’s – complicated relationship to art, politics and sexuality. MEN DRINK FREE during the program!

This adult-oriented evening features a solo-production by award-winning performance artist Holly Hughes, known for her satirical explorations of lesbian sex. We’ll also hear from Ruth Morehouse, psychologist and certified sex therapist, on female health and education, who approaches the topic of women’s sexual drive (and lack thereof) from a therapeutic perspective.

Denver Zine Library Book Sale May 16th

Denver’s Zine Library is a treasure trove of zines covering all sorts of topics and their second annual book sale is coming up!

2nd Annual Used Book Sale at the Denver Zine Library
Saturday, May 16th from 1-5pm
(The Book Sale will also take place on Sunday, May 17th from 1-5pm if there are remaining books)

They are looking for donations of all kinds – fiction, non fiction, comics, autobiographies, children’s, foreign language, cookbooks and lots more – whatever you are willing to pass along.

Vinyl Day on Wednesday!

Lots of our DJs went out for Record Store Day to buy some new vinyl so it just seemed logical that we should have a vinyl day this Wednesday for them to share it with you! Tune in all day on Wednesday when our DJs will be playing their favorite records and celebrate one of the last radio stations that still plays records!

SLEEPY SUN – Embrace [ATP]

Luck found me in the dark, locked down dungeon of my favorite radio station. I was searching out the new sounds and got sidetracked by a copy of Embrace, the debut project of San Francisco’s Sleepy Sun. Music Director Matherine assured me this compact disk would take me where I wanted to be, so I grabbed it up and moved out the exit. Of course anyone at last month’s SxSW would know Sleepy Sun, but I am not much of a wanderer. Me f’ing bad.
This release is a gambit of sludgy, tribal, whispering melded to heavily syncopated jams. Modal illusions of evilness morphing towards gospel-esque purity. These songs span where we are and the world we want to be in. Reality exists only in the silent gaps between the tracks. Listen on headphones in a face painted hypnosis and the mind alteration takes over.

If you’re into the Black Mountain Army, Dead Meadow, Blue Cheer or lonely fogs of happiness you found the next CD for your collection.

Sleepy Sun claims, “Pizza, horticulture and Neil Percival Young,” to be their shared interests and their inspiration, “bats, coming directly out of hell.” Duh!
