Bill Callahan – Dream River

Autumn is officially underway, and what better way to enjoy a cool Colorado afternoon than with modern cowboy Bill Callahan’s excellent new album, Dream River? The artist formerly known as Smog has grown into one of the most subtlely adventurous songwriters working today, and his unique mix of pastoral Americana and poignant, self-deprecating poetry make an ideal choice for 1190’s CD of the Month for October.

With his deep, billowing voice and minimalist guitar in tow, Bill Callahan leads his band through a series of songs that seem peaceful, yet yearning all at once. Though seemingly uncomplicated, each of the tracks on Dream River is tastefully layered with rural instrumentation that follows tradition while still creating a highly textured sound. His lyrics find the typically introverted Callahan finding warmth in the bonds between people, and help to make Dream River one of the downright prettiest albums Callahan has released yet.

Out on Drag City Records, Bill Callahan’s is Radio 1190’s CDOTM for October.  Radio 1190 would like to thank Bart’s CD Shack for their continued support of the CD of the Month Club. If you would like to join Radio 1190’s CD of the Month Club, visit radio1190.org for all the details.
