What's Happening
Wattowners Deliver!
Our Fall Marathon ended on October 6, just shy of the 5,000 watt goal we had set for ourselves. That's pretty amazing when you think about all the gloomy financial news that hit just as we went on the air in drive mode. Huge thanks to our staff and volunteers for their long hours and dedication. As always, nobody's pledge drive is as entertaining and awe-inspiring as Radio 1190's! We also want to thank the local businesses and restaurants who provided gift certificates and merchandise for premiums, and who fed the volunteers who kept it going. And of course, monumental appreciation to everyone who bought watts. Such dedication and faith in the future of independent radio will keep us going strong for a long time to come!
Now, let's hear some music!
10th Anniversary Live collection released
To celebrate our 10th Anniversary, Radio 1190 has compiled some great songs that were recorded live in our studios during our
first decade. Rare performances from some great independent performers including Calexico, Bonnie Prince Billy, Richmond
Fontaine, Of Montreal, Devotchka, and many more. It's not available in stores, the only way to get your copy of "10 Years in the
Ground" is to become a watt owner. For more information, click here.
Jazz Icon Donates Billy Holiday Collection for New CD of the Month Members
The founder of the iconoclastic jazz and protest music label ESP-Disk, Bernard Stollman, has made a unique gift available for the first 25 new Radio 1190 CD of the Month members during this Fall Marathon. In addition to the Radio 1190 Tenth Anniversary hoodie, t-shirt, water bottle, live mixtape, and 12-months of hand picked new releases, those pledging at the 60 watt level ($600 a year or $50 a month) will receive a special bonus. It's a 5-CD, 2-booklet set called Billie Holiday, Rare Live Recordings 1934-1959, a fascinating compilation of live performances on radio and television, studio sessions, concert and club appearances. It's one of the most comprehensive collections of live Billie Holiday Recordings to date. If you are thinking about joining at the CD of the Month level, there has never been a better time. 10th Anniversary Browsing
Celebrate Radio 1190's 10th Anniversary with a click down memory lane. Google is also celebrating an anniversary, and to do that they have put up a lot of pages from their archive to show how things where back in 2001. Take a look at Radio 1190's wayback page here.
Thank You to Those Who Are Already Pledging!
Radio 1190 is forever grateful for our listener support every pledge drive. Here is what pledge givers are saying about the station:
Dana from Denver, CO: "I love the variety of music. Your station has introduced me to many amazing artists that I would otherwise not have heard."
Keep it up! Every watt counts!
CD of the Month
Radio 1190’s CD of the month for October is “Lost Wisdom” which features Mt. Eerie collaborating with with Julie Doiron of Eric’s Trip and Fred Squire. Mt. Eerie, originally known as The Microphones, has taken many forms over the years but has always been the work of lo-fi master Phil Elverum. Before he began the Microphones Elverum was also involved in K Records bands D+ and Old Time Relijun. Elverum retired his Microphones moniker five years ago after the release of his Mt. Eerie concept album.
Westword honors Radio 1190
"Back in 1998, before it was subsumed by Clear Channel, Jacor wound up
with one more station than it could keep under FCC rules. Instead of
holding a fire sale, execs donated it to the University of Colorado at
Boulder, which up until then had made do with a school radio station that
broadcast to the dorms using carrier current. A decade later, Radio 1190
is a station worthy of celebrating, with a reach that goes far outside of
CU and even Boulder. It's an oasis of exciting music, creative programming
and community support in a desert of corporate mediocrity. Happy tenth,
and may there be many more anniversaries to follow."
-Westword, Best of Denver 2008

Featured Show:
Krewe de Louisianne
The Krewe de Louisianne brings a musical gumbo to the Radio 1190 airwaves and internet connections every Sunday afternoon from 2 – 4 p.m. {MDT}. The Krewe focuses on artists from and tunes about Louisiana – songs that vary in their origins {New Orleans street corners, sugar cane fields, sawmill juke joints, and backwater bayous} as much as they vary in style {Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, funk, swamp pop, brass band, rock n roll, blues, and R&B}.
The show aims to provide healthy portions of both familiar songs and obscure recordings; each helping sprinkled and flavoured with a diverse selection of musical ingredients…..early 20th century jazz compositions {Jelly Roll Morton} can be followed by contemporary zydeco offerings {Geno Delafose & The French Rockin’ Boogie} which in turn might give way to 1950s R&B arrangements {Dave Bartholomew}, brass band second line tunes {Dirty Dozen Brass Band}, and sultry swamp blues {Papa Lighfoot}. On occassion, the Krewe features recorded interviews with local and national touring musicians as well as live in-studio appearances.
The Krewe de Louisianne is always looking for new members to join the party; so be sure to tune in on Sunday afternoons for the ultimate Louisiana music mix tape!
